KALAARNAVA UTSAVA 2014
AN EPOCH MAKING SAGA
VENUE: JSS AUDITORIUM, BANGALORE
DATE: SUNDAY 15 JUNE 2014
Truly I am amazed the way KALAARNAVA Utsav under the aegis of Gokulam Music School, turned out to be for almost 12 hours. Like anyone in the audience, I was also wondering what it could be like, when so many performing artistes assemble in one place of action, with Singer Flautist Varijashree Venugopal and her unpretentious father, a wellknown Flautist Sri Venugopala Hemmige being cynosure of all eyes.
While the plinth was all about the dazzle for star performer Varijashree Venugopal managing the whole show with aplomb was her father’s concern. Though I could not be a part of the first edition of the programme in the morning, I made it a point to witness the second edition by evening with my neighbor. Music ensembles by various renowned artistes performed one after the other from morning followed by effervescent “Drushya-Kavya” by talented Varijashree playing “Maha Ganapathim’ on flute, that was simultaneously went scripted on the graphic screen behind, a unique experiment that was hailed by one and all present.
Finally, “World Music Fusion” was performed with elan by none other than the well known flautist Sri Naveen Kumar and party, a number from his popular ‘Café Fluid’ to begin with. Sri Venugopala Hemmige and his entire GOKULAM had done a tremendous team work to make this event a grand success. Varijashree, by now, hailed as one of the most promising & brightest young stars on the musical horizon, churned out a brilliant act by rendering few Mozart numbers, rather difficult solitary task indeed without chorus, a tribute to Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart who was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood.
Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons.
All in all, it was exhilarating performance all through barring few exceptions. Connoisseurs of pure music may consume more time to understand the difficult nuances of western and eastern classical music. Therefore, some popular numbers were played by Naveen Kumar Team to satiate discerning music lovers.
Entire Gokulam Team alongwith Varijashree, her father Venugopala Hemmige, Praveen D Rao and all other direct and indirect hands are to be complimented on their wonderful digital & tech savvy presentation that is sure to herald a new beginning of sorts. With most of them being so wonderfully talented and seasoned campaigners, likes of which cannot go wrong and their earnest endeavors too.If I opine right, evening programme could have been a tad tighter as backstage contrives consume whale of time to set things in order before each presentation.
Nonetheless, I opine and conclude,Varijashree is in possession of 3 qualities that will put her on the pedestal of success and to make it big. 1.She’s high on confidence and positive 2.Extremely curious to learn and make a real act out of that and 3. Thinks ahead of detours while in the mainstream.
