Shurjo Bhattacharya from Kolkata enthralled a full house at Indiranagar Sangeeth Sabha Purandar Bhavan on Sunday evening, 08 Dec 2013, virtually brought Late Manna Dey alive in a befitting and truest tribute like never before to the departed soul, the legend..Late Manna Dey..Such dedication can only be imbibed through Legendary peers like Manna da..Top quality singing and uniqueness can only be attributed to relentless learning.
A classy performance and far cry from ‘also ran stuff’..what a turnaround performance indeed..!! To sing is God’s gift and to sing like Manna Dey is furthermore difficult while not exactly plagiarase This is where Surjo stands apart. He has all the qualities and rare command on vibrato that the Legendary singer possessed. In addition, Shurjo’s voice resembles Manna da’s and undoubtedly, it is a treat for the listeners longing to listen to the Legend’s popular numbers. Mannada has left behind a rich legacy in Shurjo.
Getting judgmental and to draw comparison shall never end, but Shurjo is so dedicated and sincere. None can find fault with his virtuoso performance as the performance goes on with such ease and elan.
Shurjo Bhattacharya is a Bengali music composer, playback singer and lyricist. He was under direct tutelage of Pandit Ajoy Chakrabortty and Manna Dey. Having risen to fame post winning 2nd position in the 1991 Venus All India Talent Search Contest. Shurjo has sung in a number of Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Telegu films besides countless TV serials to date.
Shurjo Bhattacharya was ably accompanied by two of our own Singers, Archana Udupa and Divya Raghavan, while the main orchestra was guided by Srinivasachar Dammur (Guitar) and his team.
However, it was a regaling moment for the audience with thunderous applause while the numero uno Trumpet player of our country, Sri Kishore Sodha – specially flying to Bangalore just to be part of this event – played for super hit songs of Manna Dey. Kishore Sodha’s name is very familiar with connoisseurs and alike, has in fact, played Trumpet with country’s most celebrated music composers of our country.
Well-known media correspondent and Chirpy Anchor Vasanthi Hariprakash was live wire as ever on mike as she did a commendable job, reminiscing the days of Golden era that Manna Dey belonged to. What’s more, each one in invited audience was gifted with a special Bengali sweet,savory and the special fragrance scented sticks of Esplanade.
Long live Aloke Biswas, Arundhathi Biswas and the whole MAAM ENTERTAINMENT TEAM for spreading so much of warmth and love vide Manna Dey’s fond memory.
